Too much UV exposure generates harmful free radicals in the skin and cumulative exposure to these free radicals contributes to the break down of DNA, proteins, including collagen and elastin, and fats in skin cells. The consequence is that skin cells are damaged and cannot create healthy new cells,[i] leading to wrinkles, sun spots, thin, and sagging skin.
Just as antioxidants work inside the body to protect cells from free-radical damage, science is proving that they are also effective when applied topically. One study from the University of California, San Francisco concluded that “regular application of skin care products containing antioxidants may be of the utmost benefit in efficiently preparing our skin against oxidative stressors occurring during daily life.” Furthermore, sunscreening agents may also benefit from combination with antioxidants resulting in increased safety and efficacy of such photoprotective products [Sunscreens].”[ii]
A recent study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology shows that a topical solution of 15 percent vitamin C, combined with vitamin E, significantly protects the skin from UV damage, and is particularly effective for supporting cellular repair processes in the skin.[iii] Along with protecting the skin from UV damage, vitamin C also stimulates the production of collagen, the structural support that keeps skin plump & supple.
