Mauka to Makai

kira kira life mauka makai robert

Town: Maui, Hawaii
Country: USA

1. Why did you name your work Mauka Makai?

"Mauka" in Hawaiian language means towards the mountain, "Makai" means towards the sea. Not only are the words beautiful, they are a very practical way of traveling about the Hawaiian islands as it is very common to refer to a location that closer or "towards the mountains" or closer or "towards the sea". Plus the words together describe the island from mountain to sea, in other words: where we live, everything we love, and all that nourishes us.  This is something to respect and protect.

"Maui No Ka Oi" means Maui is the best. That feeling has been shared by Kamehameha the first king of all the islands who chose Lahaina as his seat of power until today when it still can be said (without taking anything away from the rest of the spectacular islands) that Maui is the best.

2. What is the main concept/theme of your work?

Simplicity, strong graphic design, love for Maui.

3. What would you hope for kira kira life customers when they wear your clothes?

To be proud to represent Maui life and kira kira life, to understand and represent Maui: from the strong and powerful Haleakala and West Maui mountains to the shores of the wonderful ocean where we play and surf and recreate. By wearing the shirt hopefully you can carry the mana (power) of Maui and Aloha with you wherever you are or wherever you travel to.

4. What is your favorite quote?

“Happiness is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of traveling.” - Margaret Lee Runbeck

"Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass... it's about learning how to dance in the rain." - Unknown

5. What do you do when you're feeling low?

Well, I like knocking back some Johnny Walker Black Label Whiskey and 2 Vicodin or a big surf session or fast skateboard and/or motorcycle ride or working with power tools while listen to heavy metal music half naked. Always picks me up and feeling great!
Also, I like to sit in the shade of a Jacaranda tree, sipping Mint tea, purple flowers all around me, and gaze at the majestic summit of Haleakala."
