1. Why did you name your work Rainbow Maui and Keopani O Hana?
My artist name is "manaTee". The manatee is mammal of the sea. The term "mermaid" is a nickname for the manatee. My former boss gave me this artist name because I like the ocean and fantasy, and I am a calm, mellow and funny person just like manatee.
I have two lines of design work, "Rainbow Maui" and "Kepani O Hana".
"Rainbow Maui" Rainbow is one of my favorite icons. It is magical science. It also has meanings of transfiguration, change, healing and equality. I'd like to share the Aloha spirit, which is love and peace, with my rainbow color creations.
"Kepani O Hana" I originally come from Japan. I have been living on Maui since 2005. While living here I discovered there was a large Japanese population in Hawaii dating buck to 1885. They brought with them the traditional methods of beautifully handmade items such as, Kimonos, Futon blankets, Zabuton cushions etc... I appreciate and respect my ancestor's fine work, and like to find these nostalgic, lovely things and incorporate them into this line of work.
2. What is the main concept/theme of your work? My main concepts are: -ALOHA = Love and Peace -East meets West -Old meets New -An Eco friendly relationship between nature and humans
3. What would you hope for kira kira life customers when they use your creations? When people touch my art pieces, I would like them to feel warm and happy, as under the sunshine. 4. What is your favorite quote?
”The basis of life is absolute freedom. The objective of life is absolute joy. The result of life is absolute growth." - Abraham
”Be the change you wish to see in the world." - Mahatma Gandhi
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go." - Dr. Seuss.
”Ole Ua, ‘Ole Anuenue. No rain, No rainbow.” - Hawaiian proverb
5. What do you do when you're feeling low?
I often go to the ocean when I am feeling low. I just stand or sit down by the ocean, and listen and feel the rhythm of the ocean waves. I like to float on the sea too, especially when my body is tired. Also I like to take care of my garden. It makes me feel good even to just give water to the plants, to rake the leaves, and to pull weeds out. I seem to naturally organize my heart and brain by doing these things - time for introspection. In my case, nature always helps me to reconnect to the source energy.
